Jubilo Iwata news
People in and around Almerimar A good result for the team managed by Hans Ooft today. They won 5-0 against the bottom of the league team in the J-league and moved up to 4th from bottom on goal difference. It was a must win game and they did the business.

Also, well done to the Boro for keeping a clean sheet and sneaking a late goal for the win. My brother and I take the credit. We both changed our habits to try to bring the Boro more luck.

I have started using my Middlesbrough mugs for my morning tea again and Andy has stopped watching teletext during Boro matches. This seems to have done the trick.

Almerimar Golf Course A notice has just gone up at the pro shop to say that holes 10, 12 and 15 on the Master Course at Almerimar will be temporary greens from Monday 6 October to Friday 10 October.

Having played the course on Friday I can say that most of the greens have improved from terrible condition to very poor condition. Still some way to go but at least things are getting better slowly.

UK photo driving licences only last for 10 years
Useful Information I recently read that UK photo driving licences have to be renewed every 10 years. This is something I didn´t realise.

If you look at your UK photo driving licence you will see that one of the fields on the front is marked 4b. This is the date that the licence is valid to.

Useful information for those resident in Spain or those who come here and hire cars on a regular basis.

I previously thought that I wouldn´t need to renew my licence until I am 70. However, it looks like I will have to do it earlier than I thought.

I guess that they want the photo on the front of the licence to be no more than 10 years old.

Final trip to the dentist
General almerimar24 items I made my final trip to the dentist today for my crown to be fitted.

At least this time the treatment was quick and easy with no need for injections or drilling. Just a case of pulling out the temp crown and fitting the real one.

Dr Antonio greeted me at the door on arrival and said he had read the site and thanked me for the kind words praising his dental practice. Having read other stories on the site, he went on to ask me if Alan always wore a kilt!! to which I laughed at. We then chatted quite a bit about Scottish traditions.

Hopefully, no more visits for me to the dentist for another year now.

Spanish hyperstore opening hours
Useful Information We went to play golf at Playa Serena this afternoon but the course was block booked by Tarleton. They have transferred two of their golf week rounds to Playa Serena (today and Tues) due to the state of the Almerimar course.

So we thought we would check out the opening hours of the new Decathalon sports store close to the Roquetas turn off on the motorway. As it is Sunday we didn´t expect the shop to be open. We just wanted to check times for another day.

As expected the shop was closed. We checked the opening hours and the sign said Mon-Sat 10am-10pm, Sundays & festivals 10am-10pm. We thought this a little strange as we know that most places are shut on Sunday and the shop was shut today.

Then we understood.

There was a specific table below the sign listing the dates each month the shop was open for Sundays or festivals. None in September, 12 October, 1 November and 4 dates in December.

We checked the other stores in the same shopping complex and they all had similar signs. So be careful not to misunderstand. When a sign gives opening times for Sundays and festivals it doesn´t mean that the place is open every Sunday.

State of Almerimar Golf Course
Almerimar Golf Course Following the disaster with the greenkeepers using the wrong mix of top-dressing on the greens earlier this month the course is starting to improve very slowly.

There is only one really good green and that is on hole 16 on the Master Course. However, according to the pro-shop, there is now only one temporary green in use on the Master Course. That is on hole 12 where they have relayed most of the green with turf from the putting green.

Most of the greens are in a very poor state but they are improving slowly. Most of the bare patches have been reseeded on most of the greens and you can start to see a little growth of new grass. My guess is that if the grass continues to grow at a similar pace we may have reasonable greens again in 6-8 weeks.

A lot of the surrounds of the greens are in a really bad state. However, there is a big competition organised by Tarleton for this week. So the greenkeeping staff have been marking the worst areas as ground under repair.

Work continues on the bunker surrounds where the grass has been growing in to the bunkers. The greenkeeping staff are working their way around the course tidying things up.

The fairways are a little bare in places. Particularly on holes 1 and 16 where the greenkeepers have used weedkiller on patches of old grass that were growing through. Based on the last two years we should soon see them overseeding the fairways with winter growing grass and the usual criss-cross pattern on the fairways.

The tees are in reasonable nick.

The rough under the trees has been strimmed recently and the first cut is always kept quite short. So in most cases you have a chance of finding your ball if you stray off the fairways.

Overall I don´t think the course will be in a very good state when most of our winter regulars start arriving back in October & November. However, I hope it will be OK from December onwards.

Take-aways in Almerimar?
Useful Information Another question from pjduncan.

Do we have any information about where you can get take-aways in Almerimar?

If possible, we would like some help from other readers with recommendations about take-aways here in Almerimar as we have not had any ourselves.

We have heard of the following places through friends:

Pollo Asador, on Darsena 3, have a take away menu displayed outside. I think Joan and Peter have used them for take-away chicken and chips in the past.

Tiburon, in the square at the back of Espigon, do take-away paellas. Marion has recommended this in the past. However, I am not sure whether they are open all the year round.

Pizza Guzzi, in Darsena 1, do take-away Italian food. I think I have even seen a motorbike outside with their name on so they may do deliveries as well.

I believe that Hong Kong, in Darsena 3, do take-away chinese food.

So if you have any recommendations please comment against this story to help pjduncan and others readers.

Almerimar Golf Course Just back from playing at Playa Serena with Mike M and his friends. The rain god didn´t jinx us today but it isn´t looking too good for the Almerimar24 Friday golf tomorrow.

They have now reopened the 12th tee on the course. The lake in front of the tee no longer has a nasty blue liner. The tees have been moved to the left edge of the lake so the hole now plays as a slight dog-leg left. Also, the tee shot is not quite as challenging as it used to be as both the yellow and red tees have been moved forwards a bit.

Pleasant night out at the Asador last night
Information about Almerimar We joined Mike M and his 3 golfing friends for dinner at the Asador in Almerimar last night. The restaurant is on Darsena 3 close to Cajamar bank. It serves simple Spanish food at a reasonable price.

Three of us had chicken and chips, one lamb chops and two had roast leg of lamb. All of the food was good. The only minor issue was that one of the legs of lamb had a very big bone and not that much meat on it. It was still tasty though.

A very pleasant evening was had by all. No doubt we will be back there again soon.

The restaurant also do a take-away service for nights where you don´t fancy cooking and don´t want to go out. A few of our friends have recommended this service.

Weather and golf course
Almerimar Golf Course We had our first big storm here for ages last night. A sure sign that summer is over and autumn is starting. Lots of thunder and lightning plus heavy rain. However, everything outside has almost dried up again as the sun is out and there is some breeze this morning.

Hopefully the rain will help the greens on the course grow back. As mentioned in an earlier story we have 5 temporary greens here in Almerimar up until Friday. Due to the greenkeepers spoiling the greens by using the wrong mix for top dressing a few weeks ago.

Looking out of our window this morning I saw a couple of early morning golfers who had got around to hole 11 already. Plus a group of 5-6 greeenkeepers applying top dressing by hand to the nearest green to us (hole 11). Also, the green on hole 12 has been just about completely returfed.

Useful Information Having some fun trying to help someone setting up an iPod they bought. Although they bought their computer reasonably recently the USB ports are only USB1 rather than USB2.

Given that the maximum speed of USB1 is 12Mbits/second and USB2 maximum is 480 Mbits/second there is a bit of a difference.

This particular iPod can hold 120 Gbytes of data so it will take a long time to synchronise the iPod with all the songs that we are adding on iTunes on the computer.

Looks like it will be a little trip out sometime soon to get a USB2 card installed in the computer.

Busy Friday
General almerimar24 items Yesterday was a day of a bit of website development work and a lot of golf.

This week we had to play holes 1-6 and 16-18 on the Master Course followed by the 9 holes on the Classic Course. This is because 9 holes of the Master Course are closed.

The big problem on the course is the greens. They are awful on all 27 holes. 3 weeks ago the greenkeepers put too many chemicals into the mix when they were hollow tining and top dressing. Most of the greens are in a bad way and will probably take months to recover.

Nevertheless we played our regular friendly Almerimar24 Friday golf. This week our new joiner was Amanda, the wife of Bryn who joined us for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Welcome to Amanda.

We played best 2 from 4 stableford.

Jacqui did well. Her team came second with the same number of points as the winning team but a higher combined handicap. Sadly, I came last and collected the chocolates.

After golf we were glued to the telly watching the Ryder Cup. We hope the European team do better today.

You can guess what we are going to be doing over the next 2 days so don´t expect too many posts on the site until next week.

Latest work on the greens at Almerimar - UPDATED 17 SEP 08
Almerimar Golf Course At least an attempt is being made to try to fix the greens here in Almerimar after the problems caused by the poor top-dressing.

On 16th September they closed holes 7-15 of the Master Course (the holes on our side of the road). They had people dressing the greens by hand. I guess they were using a mix of sand and seeds to help get the parts of the greens that are poor to start growing again.

When I got up this morning (17th September) I noticed that they had dug up the 13th green and some of the 15th green (old 6th and 9th) on the Master Course.

I rang the pro shop and they said that people are playing 1-6, 16-18 (old holes 10-18 starting at old hole 13 - long par 4 and looping round to the island green in front of the hotel) then the Classic Course.

They did not know how long the course would be like this but given that some greens are being dug up my guess it will be for a while.

See below for some photos from our terrace of one of the greens they are working on.

Help please - fair at Dalias this week?
Tourist sites within 2 hour of Almerimar Pete and Pat from Chill Out phoned us earlier this evening asking about the dates for the fair in Dalias this year. Last year it was a  multi-day event with the finale on 16 September 2007.

The night concluded with a parade of a statue around the town and a mass of rockets going into the sky at midnight. (See the Photo Gallery for photos and some video from last year).

This year we think the fair is happening this week with the parade and big display of rockets this coming weekend (20/21 September).

I am in the process of trying to download something from the Dalias website to confirm the dates. However, if someone knows for certain what is happening in Dalias please could you let us know.

PS If it is this coming weekend it will clash with the Ryder Cup so I guess we will miss the event as we will be glued to the telly.

Congrats to Cynthia - another hole in one
People in and around Almerimar Just had an email from John and Cynthia. Amongst other things they mentioned the bad weather in England and how they were looking forward to coming back to Almerimar for the autumn and winter.

In the email John mentioned that Cynthia had another hole in one recently. The ladies section of their club has only had 4 hole in one´s this year and Cynthia has had two of them. How greedy is that?

We are looking forward to seeing John and Cynthia back in Almerimar soon.

Correction to the dates of the Weds market in El Ejido
Events taking place in Almerimar I have received the following correction to the dates of the market from some of our regular readers, Sylvia & Terry.

Have just read your article on the market and must point out it takes place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month. If there are 5 Weds in a month there are 2 weeks running without a market.

We have been caught out by this in the past. If a fiesta falls on a Weds then there is often a market later in the month. Ask the egg man (eggs are delicious) as his info is always reliable.

We go every week as the fruit and veg keep so much better than supermarket ones.

Many thanks to Sylvia and Terry for this information.

Out and about on Almerimar Golf Course - 13 Sept 08
Almerimar Golf Course Jacqui´s recent article was all about the La Cumbre golf competition in Almerimar today.

While we were going around the course I took some pictures of the state of the greens and one of the fairways. Plus progress on the clubhouse and lack of progress on the hotel.

I also took some pictures of the new palm trees that have been planted on the corner of the 17th hole. It looks like Sune will no longer be able to play his low draw around the corner to try to go for the green in two.

See the Photo Gallery.
